Work has begun on a new Interstate 77 interchange that will serve the under-development Scout Motors Production Center in Blythewood.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation along with local and state officials and Scout Motors leadership met recently for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Scout Motors Drive Interchange Project.
The purpose of the Scout Motors Drive Interchange Project is to serve the future Scout Motors manufacturing facility and provide access for future economic development, according to a news release.
“We are excited to begin the construction phase of this project that will be vital to continuing development in Blythewood and the surrounding areas. SCDOT is committed to keeping people and products flowing through our state and we are looking forward to doing that alongside Scout Motors and the community,” Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell said in the release.

The project includes a connector road from the proposed Exit 26 to U.S. 21, according to the project website. Portions of U.S. 21 are proposed be relocated to create a grade separated crossing for a new Norfolk Southern Railroad spur line that will serve the Scout facility, the website states. A new railroad bridge over I-77 is proposed to provide rail access to the west side of I-77, according to the site.
“This new interchange isn’t just a benefit for Scout, but a boost for our residents and commuters by increasing mobility as the area grows around us,” Richland County Government Council Chairwoman Jesica Johnson Mackey said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
